The Rocky Hill Volunteer           Fire Department

Rocky Hill, Connecticut..

A Taskforce 51 member town.....

History of the Rocky Hill Volunteer Fire Department

The Rocky Hill Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1927. Our first Fire Chief was Starr Elmore. He served as Chief until 1932. At that time Rocky Hill was just a farming community and several farmers got together to help each other when an emergency happened.  As the town grew, more and more houses and barns needed protection.

The original firehouse was a 2 bay building located on Church Street.  It was situated in what was the center of town in 1927 and still the area is considered the “center of town” today.

Many stories are told of the “old days” of the fire serivce in Rocky Hill. The days of trying to get an engine up the hill on Old Main Street from the Wethersfield line towards the town center, firefighters being told of a fire by “word of mouth”, the first fire alarm notification system and even the early “blue light” days. All volunteer fire departments have many stories that relate to the beginning days, some good, some not so good. We are no different! We have had our good days and the bad. We are volunteers....
