STANDARD
OPERATING GUIDELINE
Purpose: To maintain a standard of safety and
performance at motor vehicle accidents which do not require victim removal.
Scope: At all MVAs the following must
occur to provide for the safety of the Fire Department, Police Department, EMS,
and bystanders.
Procedure: At all MVAs the apparatus shall be placed to protect the crews from being subjected to on coming and passing vehicles.
A safe work zone shall be established and maintained for the duration of the incident and only firefighters directly involved with the evolution should enter this zone.
Any vehicle involved must be chocked or otherwise stabilized until the incident is controlled and the vehicle is removed. This can also be accomplished with the emergency brake and transmission.
Any time FD or EMS personnel are working inside the vehicle, the battery must be disconnected for protection from air bag deployment.
When appropriate, the batteries on the involved vehicles shall be disconnected, the negative cable being removed first. Whenever possible the cables should be disconnected instead of cut.
If cutting the cable is necessary, 2 cuts shall be made on the cable approximately 2 inches apart so that the cable cannot touch the terminal.
All personnel shall be in full protective clothing.
If possible, stop all fuel leaks
Have a 1-¾ inch handline with an automatic nozzle deployed and manned by 2 firefighters with SCBA. Foam will be used for incidents involving a gasoline spill/leak.
At the IC discretion, gasoline spills will be covered with a blanket of foam, which will be maintained for the duration of the incident.
Also any leaking fluids must be absorbed and the run-off contained. If necessary notify the DEP.
If commercial vehicles are involved, check the placard and take necessary precautions.
IC shall coordinate with EMS personnel regarding patient care.
IC shall coordinate with PD and Fire Police concerning traffic control.
