STANDARD OPERATING POLICY

Exterior Firefighter-Driver Program

Scope: The exterior firefighter-Driver program is open to any member who has 20 years of accredited service as an active firefighter.

Procedure: The program is limited to a total of 9 department members with no more then 3 coming from any individual company.

Inclusion in the program will be based upon seniority with the selection being made at the company level.

It is the Company Captain’s responsibility to notify the Chief and Assistant Chief of his selections.

Exterior Firefighters shall:

· Be qualified to drive all apparatus assigned to their respective station and when attending a call shall act in this capacity.

· If responding to a call in POV shall immediately seek out company apparatus and assume responsibility as driver/engineer.

· Be provided with a helmet shield identifying them as a driver/ engineer, if member whishes to remain as an interior firefighter, there will be no change in the helmet shield.

· Attend a minimum of 1 drill per month and completes all required core topics and any training required through Target Safety.

· Be qualified to wear a SCBA FOR ESCAPE PURPOSES ONLY.

· Will be required to be fit tested yearly and have a Department physical as spelled out in the Division Rules.

· Any Firefighter entering into this program and choosing to remain as an Interior Firefighter will be required to take all training to qualify for that status.

· The main responsibility for those choosing to be qualified as an Interior Firefighter will still remain as Driver/ Engineer whenever possible.

· Any Firefighter entering into program will be entitled to the Pay per Call Program.

· In order to qualify for additional benefits Pension and Tax Abatement, member will be required to make 23% of calls and 50% of the drills.
